windows 98 wont boot up. not even to safe mode. BSOD says "unmountable boot volume" any ideas on how to fix? not sure if we have any boot discs yet. I have a copy of ultimate boot disc i downloaded online. will this work? and if so is it self explanitory? do i just boot from this cd?

An error such as that usually means you are fuct. What the Win98 loader is telling you is that it can't find a volume to load the OS from. The boot partition of the drive obviously is correct in knowing that there should be an OS somewhere on the drive, but it can't find it. Sometimes using "chkdsk /r" from a win98 boot disk will fix the error but it's doubtful. Why oh why are you even bothering with a Win98 machine?!?!?!

There, I changed my avatar to Mila :) As far as it being XP Home. Just us an XP boot disk and go into the recovery console and run fdisk /r.
